Difficulty with self driving cars is that they use cues from the roads to drive. Rural roads don’t always have centrelines, certainly don’t have lines marking the shoulders, and can often be windy/hilly, poorly maintained and have trees fallen on them. Rural areas often don’t have buses or taxis so seniors who rely most on cars won’t be able to benefit from these products.
Private care in Assisted Living centres can cost over $10,000/month for 1 person. 24 hour care in one’s home can be more than double that ($25,000/month). This is what it cost to care for my in-laws, pre 2020. So seniors that are financially independent may be able to afford a robot, and maybe there would be “leasing” plans.
Somethings to consider are 1) who is available to provide tech support that the senior may not be able to do (my in-laws didn’t know how to operate their TV/cable/PVR remote 2) human help (be it housekeeper, care support worker, meal delivery person) provide social interaction and 3) impact on society if housekeepers, support workers, delivery persons etc lose their jobs.
